Rossett School Students show their caring side

Sixth Form students from Rossett School in Harrogate have been making friends with the older generation, thanks to an initiative that sees them visiting some of the town’s care homes.

One group spends time at Heath Lodge, on Pannal Ash Road, twice a week to read poetry and short stories, while Food Technology students have enjoyed discussing what kind of food residents ate when they were younger and learning more about their diets in days gone by.

As a result, they’ve put together a selection of recipes which they plan to publish and will also recreate to share with those who inspired them.

“We think it’s very important for our students to be part of the local community and it’s lovely that they genuinely enjoy spending time with the people they’ve met through this initiative,” said Mrs Pat Hunter, Rossett School’s headteacher.

“The experience is a valuable part of their further education studies and also a great way of promoting understanding and friendship between the generations.”

Rossett School Awards

Rossett AwardsStudents’ successes and achievements were celebrated at Rossett School’s recent annual awards evening.

As well as highlighting the good work being done in school, the parents, teachers and guests present heard from Mark Allison, the British man who made national headlines after running 3,100 miles across the United States for charity earlier this year.

Mark, known as ‘Run Geordie Run’, averaged 31 miles per day over 100 days on his route from California to New York City, covering 13 states and through extreme conditions from heat to snow.

“He’s a great role model and I was delighted when he agreed to come and talk at our presentation evening,” said Rossett School’s deputy headteacher, Mr Paul McIntosh.

“We held a raffle on the night which, along with our school contribution, raised £650 which we’re giving to The Children’s Foundation – Mark’s chosen charity. Special thanks must go to Restaurant Bar and Grill in Harrogate for their prize donation of a meal for two.”

Mr McIntosh added: “I’d also like to thank David Morgan and his team at the Holiday Inn in Harrogate. They very kindly put Mark up in the hotel free of charge so that he could be with us – we very much appreciate their support.”

Mark Allinson also spoke about his next challenge – a 2,600-mile ‘jog’ across Australia in 2013.

Community Hall Project Oatlands Harrogate

Please help us re-establish our community hall into a thriving social hub!!!

Oatlands Pre-School in Harrogate has recently purchased the former Methodist Church on Mount Street, Harrogate. This move will secure the future of the school for some 70 pre-schoolers. It will also restore the building’s place as a meeting place for the local community.

Restoration work has already begun to improve disabled access by installing new toilet facilities and a level floor. To pay for a new roof, damp proofing, new heating and kitchen facilities, the Pre-School has launched its ‘Change for Change’ appeal asking for cash donations to contribute to its £200,000 appeal.

Please help us make our hall into a place for the local community by donating at www.bt.com/mydonate and searching for Oatlands Pre-School or by contacting Oatlands Pre-School on 01423 871846.

In the very short term, we need to get people to vote for a £6k award we are applying for from NatWest’s Community Fund. As votes need to be cast by next Monday, is there any chance you could put it on in the next couple of days?

As you may be aware, Oatlands Pre-School has recently purchased its premises from the Methodist Church and is in the process of modernising the former church hall to make it into a community hall which can be used by the local community for children’s parties, classes, social events etc. So far, we have installed new flooring, disabled access and modern toilets but still have a long way to go to complete our renovation work. To pay for a new heating system, we are in the process of applying for a £6,000 award from the NatWest Community Fund. Please vote for us by Monday 10th October by following this link http://communityforce.natwest.com/project/2547. Every vote really will help us. Thank you
